I wrote a research paper early in the pursuit of my bachelor's degree at the University of Utah. This was in 1971 which was 55 years ago. My conclusion was that there was no need to drop A bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end the war in the Pacific. Japan was indeed ready to negotiate surrender. President Harry S. Truman committed a war crime against Japan by selecting two civilian targets instead of military targets. Let that sink in. It was a war crime. A crime against humanity.
If they had to drop an atomic bomb they could have done it far enough off the coast to demonstrate it's power without killing and radiating people. Or maybe even hit a military base with a smaller one.
it goes much deeper than this though. The real lesson is about the gears of war, and how they’re nearly impossible to stop once they’re set in Motion. Truman knew that it would be absolute political suicide if the American people found out that he had declined to use the weapon that they had spent an ungodly sum of money on developing, and instead ordered an all-out invasion of Japan, sending thousands more G.I.’s to their death, after some of the most horrific fighting imaginable in the island hopping campaigns in the south Pacific, where thousands of lives of both sides were sacrificed for literal patches of mud in the ocean. Again, I’m not trying to justify it. There is no justification for such violence. but the forces of history are powerful things.
The entire loss of millions is a flaw premise. Japan was entirely on the ropes. Truman could have negotiated an end or even just kept bombing and using naval artillery. There was no need to send in troops.
That is incredibly easy to say in retrospect. Again, I’m not telling you it was the right thing to do. Only that it would have taken IMMENSE bravery not to do it. And Truman was not that man.
Not shocked but I like history. I hope we have entered an era where we can admit that as a country we’re not that great to our own people and to people in other countries.
